Passenger Traffic

In 2018, 213.7 million passengers were processed at African airports, which account for 2.4% of the World passenger traffic. Domestic passenger traffic represented 32.7% of the total passenger movements in Africa over the same period.

The passenger traffic growth 2017 / 2018 has been 9.4%, which represents the highest growth compared to other regions, as illustrated on the chart below. The domestic and international passenger traffic growth 2017 / 2018 was 6.5% and 10.7% respectively.

Cargo Traffic

In 2018, 2.5 million metric tons of cargo transited at African airports, representing around 2% of the World cargo volume. Domestic freight accounted for 4.4% of the total cargo traffic in Africa over that period. The cargo traffic growth was 9.7% in 2018 compared to 2017, which again represents the highest growth among the regions, as depicted on the chart below.

Aircraft Movements

African airports handled 3.2 million aircraft movements in 2018 representing 3.2 % of the world’s aircraft movements. The growth between 2017 and 2018 has been 4.2% which is the second highest growth compared to other regions of the World, as shown below.
